A recent online post has sparked heated discussion after a visitor was recorded showing a mobile phone to Ding Ding, a popular chimpanzee at Shanghai Wild Animal Park.

In the viral video, a visitor can be seen pressing a phone against the enclosure glass. The phone plays dynamic music and the chimpanzee stares intently at the screen, occasionally scratching its face while focused on the device.

A sign next to the enclosure clearly states: “STOP! STOP! Do not show me your phone.” 

The original poster identified the scene as taking place at Shanghai Wild Animal Park, and the chimp as Ding Ding, one of the park’s most famous animal residents.

On Thursday afternoon, the park’s official video account had a live stream with Ding Ding. When asked about the incident, a staff member responded: “It’s hard to say whether he is addicted or not.”

The main reason for discouraging visitors from showing phones to the chimpanzee, the staff explained, is concerns for the animal’s health. “If it didn’t affect his health, people could show him whatever they want.”

The staff further elaborated that prolonged exposure to phone screens could harm the chimp’s eyesight. “If his eyes are damaged, he can’t tell us. He can’t wear glasses either. Blurry vision could make him anxious and eventually cause broader health issues.”

For Ding Ding’s well-being, the park urges visitors not to show him their phones — though taking photos is still allowed. Staff members will intervene if they see anyone attempting to show content to the chimp.
